Salta „the Pretty”
The name Salta originates from the Aimara language (native tribe from South-America); “sagta” means “the most beautiful”.
What makes Salta special is the colonial architecture; important buildings that date back to the viceroyalty and the Spanish Conquest still remain intact today. Furthermore, the panoramic background with the Andean mountain range fascinates every visitor. Not only the people from Salta, but the whole country are proud of this northern jewel, Salta “the Pretty”.

A walk through the city
First of all, we advise you to walk through the city and simply watch and observe.
Many places and spots are stuffed with history. A good way to start the tour is in the city centre, at the square 9 de Julio, as most of the tourist attractions are close and easy to reach from there.
One of these is the Cabildo (former government building) that stands in front of the square. It was first built around 1626 and after several modifications and restorations, today it is the historic museum of the north and the best preserved Cabildo in Argentina.
Close to the square there is also the Cathedral that was built from 1858 on. Its classic Italian style shows typical friezes and laborious cornices. Inside, you can visit the hall of fame “Glorias del Norte” where the remains of General Martin Miguel de Güemes lay, a national hero from the Salta Province who fought for the Argentine independence.
The church and convent San Francisco is also worth a visit. Today it is painted in an intense terracotta colour and an interesting object of the architecture in Salta. The tower is 52 m high and one of the highest in South-America.
The San Bernando hill is another highlight. In the San Martin park you can take a ride in the teleferic to the top and, if you prefer, walk down on the uncountable stairs. You can enjoy the green park on top and from the various viewpoints you have the possibility to overlook the city.
This city tour takes one day and allows you to visit all the attractive places and spots in Salta.
An alternative tour in the surroundings of Salta
A perfect combination is the traditional city tour to discover the pre-Hispanic history and culture with alternative options that include riding in the province and what offers the possibility to enjoy the natural beauties and attractive landscapes. This experience is outstanding.
Riding to places that you can solely reach by horse gives you another insight in Salta’s culture as you meet people in remote communities whose way of living has not changed since colonial times; they are too far away to be influenced by the city life and so have remained intact their traditions throughout hundreds of years.
