Hungary: The Land of Plains

The Republic of Hungary, the land of the Magyars, is an Eastern European country that is part of the European Union.

It borders 7 European countries, making it a strategic enclave.

Its capital is Budapest, divided by the Danube River, which runs from north to south for 417 km, forming two districts, Buda and Pest.

The other major Hungarian river is the Tisza, which comes from Ukraine and crosses Hungary parallel to the Danube.

Along the course of the rivers are small lakes. Lake Balaton, located in the western part, is the largest in Europe outside the great Baltic lakes.

Geography of Hungary

Unlike its neighboring countries, Hungary is dominated by plains, interrupted in some places by low mountain ranges.

In Hungary, we can distinguish three geographic units:

  • The Great Plain: occupies the south and east of the country. It consists of river sediments and loess layers from glacial erosion.
  • The Little Plain: located in the northwest, bordering Austria and Slovakia. It is an undulating plain whose elevation does not exceed 200 meters.
  • The Transdanubian region (Dunantul): this area features a series of more or less prominent hills, forming the country's mountain backbone, stretching for more than 400 km. In the Highlands, in the Mátra Mountains, is the highest peak in the country, Kékes (1,014 m).

The climate is continental, with summers ranging from hot to mild, and cold winters.

Flora and Fauna

Since Hungary is mostly flat, the predominant vegetation is grassy steppe. However, in the northern hills and the Transdanubian region, there are forests of oaks, beeches, firs, poplars, and holm oaks.

Representative fauna includes the tall and robust Hungarian cattle breed, descended from prehistoric aurochs, the European bison. Other livestock such as cows, pigs, and sheep are also found.

Birds abound throughout the territory, but Lake Balaton is where the greatest variety of both fauna and flora can be found.

Equestrian Tourism in Hungary

Hungary is a country with a strong equestrian tradition. It has numerous horse offers, riding schools, and horse farms.

Today, there are more than 200 specialized tourist establishments in Hungary to get started in the art of horse riding, discovering the landscapes on one- or multi-day excursions and combining it with other sports activities.

The "Puszta" or Great Plain, with its vast stretches of steppe, typical of Hungary's flatlands, is a wonderful paradise for riders and horses.

To enjoy Hungary's nature, the best is to visit its national parks and nature reserves. In the Great Plain are the Hortobágy National Park and the Kiskunság National Park.

Kiskunság National Park provides a diverse environment for cross-country riding all year round, with sandy trails among picturesque hills, forests, and lakes full of vegetation, wildlife, and birds.

In addition, we can combine horseback routes with an approach to its culture and traditions. Discover its Roman ruins and medieval houses, enjoy its famous thermal waters, and taste its gastronomy.

And if you can, don't miss the International Equestrian Days held in Hortobágy in July, with equestrian shows and displays of the craftsmanship of the shepherds and cowboys of the Great Plain.

Hungarian Horse Breeds

Hungarian horse breeds come from crossing the country's warmbloods with English or Arabian thoroughbreds. Hungarians were originally developed for cavalry regiments as well as for light agricultural tasks.

  • Nonius: The oldest warmblood horse breed in Hungary that does not originate from the native Hungarian breed. It is characterized by its toughness and robustness. Despite its liveliness, the Nonius has a balanced temperament and is very kind and eager to learn.
  • Warmblood: A horse breed native to Hungary, considered one of the most elegant and refined in the world. They also have exceptional endurance and intelligence.
  • Kisbér: This breed was developed in Hungary and is a mix of several strong breeds, such as Trakehners of Arabian origin and Selle from France. Known for their athletic condition, making them very suitable for long journeys on horseback, on routes lasting several days.
