Equine Biomechanics: Horse Locomotion

By: Nestor Imberti Posted: 26/05/2023

Since there are already many specialized books on horse biomechanics, this article is not intended to be a treatise on that subject, rather an approach to those aspects of equine biomechanics that we must keep in mind when training and riding a horse.

Given its breadth, we have split the topic into three articles, where we will deal with the following aspects:

  • Equine locomotion
  • Horse gaits
  • Central pattern generator (CPG)

In this first article, we will discuss the fundamental concepts of a horse’s movements, define each of them and explain the importance of timing your aids correctly, both in training and horseback riding.

Working knowledge of equine biomechanics is key in achieving quality horse training.
