Purmamarca and the Hill of Seven Colours

Purmamarca

Jujuy offers some of the most amazing landscapes in Argentina and is a pleasure for all your senses. Among all the places you should visit in Jujuy, Purmamarca is an outstanding little village that is situated at 65 km from the capital of the Province, San Salvador de Jujuy.

The name “Purmamarca” origins from the Aimara language. “Purma” means desert and “marca” means town, so it can be translated as “desert town”, but the Aimaras also denominated virgin land as desert, so the better translation would be “town of the virgin land”.

The origin of Purmamarca dates back to pre-Hispanic times and today the population is slightly more than 2.000 inhabitants. Their lives circle around the village square, the daily arts and crafts market, a millennial carob tree and the church, Saint Rose from Lima, built in 1648.

The Hill of Seven Colours

Purmamarca lays in the foothills of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, in English the Hill of Seven Colours, which offers a fantastic background panorama for this mountain village. The wide range of colours is surprisingly unique and the result of geological sedimentation of multiple mineral layers during millions of years.

This colour palette is a natural phenomenon you will not find anywhere else in the world and you will never get bored looking at the colours – clay gives it the rose tone, limestone the white colour, mudstone (iron) the red colour, green due to oxidised argillite and yellow because of sulphur-containing sand-lime brick. In 2003, the Hill of Seven Colours was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage and since then, this northern region has become an important hotspot for tourists in Argentina.

You can participate in many exciting tours around Purmamarca, but we think that a riding tour is the best way to explore this place. Ampascachi offers their guests various options to ride in the north and discover Purmamarca on horseback. We focus on your well-being and safety while you ride to the most beautiful places in these colourful landscapes and enjoy ancient traditions, typical food, music and dances.

Discover the Hill of Seven Colours and the region around Purmamarca with Ampasacachi! This colourful riding holiday is worthy and highly recommended.
