Exploring this country on horseback is an unforgettable experience.
Ride towards the End of the World!
Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province, in Argentina, is the southernmost city in the world.
In this place, with great lakes, forests, rivers and mountains, Centro Hípico Fin del Mundo offers superb horse riding. A place where space abounds and freedom is an exciting and extraordinary feeling.
So far, Centro Hípico de Ushuaia (Ushuaia Riding Centre) is the only one horse riding centre in Ushuaia that can offer the possibility to discover the “End of the World” on horseback and they have different types of rides.
Riders who have little time can go for 2, 4 or 7 hour rides. All of them have an intermediate level of difficulty and you ride Argentine Criollo horses.
Likewise, they offer a special ride that is meant for riders who have the time and the skills to enjoy long riding adventures. That is the Peninsula Mitre Expedition.
An expedition for brave and contemplative riders
The Peninsula Mitre ride is a 10 day tour. It starts at Ushuaia Airport with transfer services and it ends at the same place. The key to this ride is its exploring nature, focused on discovering mythical places, shipwrecks, rural estancias and stunning landscapes.
This is an authentic expedition, where riders are in close contact with nature and travel on horseback, like our ancestors. They can take in the wonderful panoramic views in solitude and contemplate the wildlife. In turn, riders can also discover marine fauna and shipwrecks along the Southern Ocean.

“Peninsula Mitre” Expedition Itinerary
First day: After an obligatory briefing with the group and coordinators to give details of the trip, guests will be transferred to their accommodation at “Estancia Maria Luisa”, a typical Patagonian ranch for breeding cattle and timber production. Guests will have their first approach to the gaucho lifestyle in Patagonia.
It is here that you will meet your horses for the first time. A horse will be assigned to each guest. Then, you will traverse the Irigoyen River which is world famous for huge trout (10 kg or more!). Your first overnight destination is ‘Puesto La Chaira’, the last shelter inhabited by gauchos on your route.
Second day: The following day, you will undertake the long ride to the shelter ‘Puesto Rio Bueno’. Along the way, all traces of civilization slowly disappear and riders will get the chance to see the wilder side of Tierra del Fuego – you will be a privileged witness!
You will see several shipwrecks along the ride, such as the "Barca" - an old wooden boat, which has been buried by centuries of sand. You can still see its prow on the beach. There are also abandoned shelters of the Estancia Policarpo, many of which have been built with remains of ships. We will see the fauna in all its glory in an endless list of species. Here the traces of the native Haush Indians can be found. After passing the river Leticia, you will reach your shelter for the night.
Third day: You are going to Estancia Policarpo which was declared a National Historic Landmark. The trail takes you across the peatland where you will be able to see the different abilities of the horses, while walking on this terrain. Along the way you could see the local wildlife: sea lions and king penguins. You come across strong>“Falsa Creek” which was founded in the early 20th century and abandoned in the 60’s.
Fourth day: On this day, we are going to cross the peatland, soft terrain, forests, which can force riders to dismount several times. Once you have reached your destination, you could visit the cormorant colony and observe other bird species like condors, albatrosses, geese, bustards, oystercatchers, caracaras, among others. Another highlight of the route is the former Argentine Sub prefecture, a shelter and rescue military detachment for the frequent shipwreck survivors of this area.
Fifth day: There is an optional 7-hour hike where you can visit the remotest places of this territory. First, Thetis Bay. The terrain is mostly peatland, and you can visit the “tip of Tierra del Fuego where you can ee the South Atlantic Ocean, Staten Island and the Beagle Channel”.
Sixth day: Rest day in Thetis Bay, so you can recover your energy and continue with your trip.
Seventh day: You are going back to Thetis Bay and Policarpo, through some spectacular cliffs. You will witness the perfect combination of sub Antarctic forest, the Andes Mountain Range and the Southern Ocean.
Eighth day: Here you will need all your bravery as a rider to cross the most dangerous river in the whole expedition – the Policarpo River. From now on, the load is lighter, so you will be able to speed up your pace (trot and gallop).
Ninth day: You can explore the Río Bueno area – main infrastructure for bovine production which was formerly done by the “puesteros” (ranch hands). You ride along the Leticia River, and you can make different stops and gallop on the beach.
Tenth day: Last day to say goodbye to gauchos and baqueanos (local guides), and horses too! Then, you will be transferred to the Airport.
Riding in freedom
“Centro Hípico Fin del Mundo” offers something very special in its “Peninsula Mitre” expedition, since there is no other equestrian tourism outfitter in Argentina offering this kind of horseback tours in this remote southern region.
In addition to beautiful rivers, lakes, forests and wildlife, the most outstanding feature of this equestrian program is the huge amount of space you will have for riding in Tierra del Fuego. This expedition is an impressive adventure and an encounter with oneself.

Horse riding expedition at Península Mitre Was my best ever equestrian adventure. Adolfo and Laura, Centro Hípico owners, are great passionate guides, with wide knowledge of the Tierra del Fuego, it history, culture and nature. Their Criollo horses were brave, sure-footed and easy going. Península Mitre is truly End of The World, so wild, spacious, challenging, beautiful. We disconnected with modern world, returned to basics and enjoyed re-connecion with nature. We saw seal, sea lions, penguins, and my favorite : wild horses. And so simple but always great atracion: cantering on the Atlantic beaches :) This is amazing tour for all adventurous souls.
